Design two point oh!

"Design 2.0 is about the next generation of design that will make you millions billions squillions of dollars in the new Web 2.0 economy.”

Ugh.

You would be completely justified in thinking that’s what this blog is about given the current climate. Thankfully, that’s not the case!

By way of introduction, my name is Luke Stevens, and this blog is about taking a critical look at design on the web. I will be trying to cut through the hype and nonsense to see where design really works, where it doesn’t, and where it is going.

I’ll be keeping an eye on the emerging design sensibilities and strategies that continue to appear all over the place - I find the rate design evolves online genuinely interesting, so it should be fun to track these developments and see where it all goes.

Designers have real choices to make in their work that can dramatically effect the success or failure of a site, and in turn the product, business, or content it serves, not to mention our fellow citizens who have to use it. We therefore have a real responsibility to make the best choices we can for all involved, so I hope in the very least my writing here helps me to make better choices in my own work.

The great thing about the web is the opportunities it affords individuals to educate themselves. I find I can read all the articles in the world and glean bits of wisdom here and there but, personally speaking, to really engage my brain I have to sit down and write.  So that’s what I plan to do. No comments, no fluff, just writing and learning about design.

So, here we go!

About

I'm Luke Stevens and this is where I write about design on the web. I know, "Design 2.0" is insufferably wanky (and hardly original), but what better term to use to write about sensible design on the web?

Good design is like common sense - surprisingly thin on the ground. Hopefully this blog will, in some small way, encourage myself and others to think more critically about the design choices we make and the results they achieve.
